RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Researcher
Innovative Radiofrequency Electrotherapy Significantly Reduces Cornea Perforation in Alkali Burn Murine Model
• Supported a high-quality research investigation into the effectiveness of Radiofrequency Electrotherapy in reducing the perforation rate in alkali burned corneas
• Employed best practice and adherence to all pertinent protocol in performing 1N alkali burns on mice to induce a severe cornea inflammation
• Administered treatment on a bi-weekly basis; applying a QMR radiofrequency current (following a 30 seconds ON/30 seconds OFF protocol) to one eye of each of the 20 animals being treated, using a small metal electrode touching the cornea
• Ensured quality outputs and the validity of the experiment through the application of ‘fake treatment’ to a sample of 20 mice
• Meticulously assessed, monitored and recorded the animals throughout the treatment period, while consulting with an ophthalmologist regarding cornea perforations
• Utilized t-test to determine the significance of the differences in infiltrating CD45+ cells in the control vs. treated animals, before testing the differences between the perforation rate in the control vs. treated animals using the Gehan-Breslow-Wilcoxon test
• Translated research findings into clearly-defined research outputs for publication in the Journal of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science
Thesis Research
The Effect of Molecular Quantum Resonance on Corneal Wound Healing
• Led on the design and execution of a major research project to explore the effects of Quantum Molecular Resonance (QMR) treatment on corneal wound healing (in a murine model)
• Performed extensive background research to gain a comprehensive understanding of existing literature and treatments in the field; leveraging this to identify opportunities for improvement and knowledge advancement
• Defined research/experiment parameters, and aligned all processes with contemporary best practices to ensure the validity and accuracy of results, and the safe handling of animals
• Gained approval from the Animal Care and Use Committee of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute to perform cornea removals, prior to inducing damage and administering treatment over a 28-day period
• Measured, monitored and documented key metrics throughout the experiment
• Employed a suite of advanced analytical techniques, including unpaired t-test and a two-way Anova test to evaluate the differences in immune cell infiltration, neovascularization, lymph-angiogenesis, VEGF-α, IL1β and SP concentration, and corneal epithelial damage, opacity and phimosis respectively
• Visualized and translated data into high quality conclusions to contribute to the body of information in relation to the effect of Quantum Resonance on corneal wound healing
